The first burn decides everything

Cotton wicks are the default for a reason

The cotton wick is what most soy candles use, and it's what I pour in my own batches. The flat braid, the kind you see in most jars, burns evenly and doesn't curl into a soot factory. The version I stock in my own shop is a CD wick, which is a cotton wick with a paper thread running through it. It stays upright in soy, which is softer than paraffin, and it doesn't mushroom as fast.

The trade-off is that cotton wicks need to be matched to the jar diameter. A wick that's too small for a wide jar will drown in the melt pool. A wick that's too big will burn hot and soot the glass. I've seen a 3-inch diameter jar with a wick meant for a 2-inch candle, and the flame was dancing like a matchstick. The buyer blamed the candle. It was the wick.

Wood wicks are the divas of the candle world

I want to like wood wicks more than I do. The crackle is nice. The aesthetic is nice. But they are temperamental in a way that cotton wicks simply aren't.

The issue is the melt pool. Wood wicks need the wax to be hot enough to keep the flame going, but they also need the wick to be trimmed to a very specific length. Too long, and the flame gets tall and sooty. Too short, and it drowns in the melt pool and goes out. I've burned candles with wood wicks that needed a relight every twenty minutes because the wick couldn't sustain itself.

There's a brand I stock in the shop that uses a wood wick in a soy blend, and it works because the wick is paired with a snug jar. The crackle is there, the burn is clean, and the throw is respectable. But I've also burned wood wick candles that were a disaster by hour two, with a flame that was an inch and a half tall and a jar that was streaked with soot. The wick was too long and the buyer hadn't trimmed it. The instructions on the label said to trim it. They didn't.

If you're going to buy wood wick candles, commit to the maintenance. Trim before every burn. Watch the flame height in the first half hour. If it's dancing, blow it out and trim again. It's a relationship, not a purchase.

Zinc-core wicks are the throw kings

Yankee uses a zinc-core wick in their large jars, and I've poured that exact wax for other brands, so I know the blend. The zinc core keeps the wick stiff in the paraffin-heavy wax, which is softer at lower temperatures. It also burns hotter, which means more fragrance is released into the air. That's why a Yankee jar can throw scent across a room in a way that most soy candles can't match.

The downside is that zinc-core wicks mushroom. Badly. If you don't trim them, the carbon ball grows, the flame gets smaller, and the throw drops off. I've seen a Yankee jar that was burned for six hours without a trim, and the wick looked like a tiny black cauliflower. Trim it, and the candle comes back to life.

The other issue is soot. Zinc-core wicks burn hotter, and if the wick is too long, you'll get a streak down the glass. I've logged that exact failure in my burn journal more than once. It's not the candle's fault. It's the wick's fault, and the wick's fault is the trimmer's fault.

Paper wicks are the quiet overachiever

I don't see paper wicks in many retail candles, but they're worth knowing about. They burn clean, they don't mushroom, and they work well with vegetable waxes like soy and coconut. The downside is that they're fragile. If you bend one during shipping or handling, it can break the wick's structure and cause an uneven burn.

I've tested a few candles with paper wicks, and the burn quality is impressive. No soot, no mushrooming, a consistent flame height. But they're not common, and they don't work in large jars because they can't handle the heat of a big melt pool. If you find a candle with a paper wick in a small or medium jar, it's worth trying. Just don't expect to find many.

HTP wicks are the premium option

HTP stands for "high temperature paper," and it's a flat braided wick that's coated with a paper thread. It's common in higher-end soy candles because it burns consistently and doesn't curl. The catch is that it needs to be precisely sized to the jar. A jar that's a quarter inch wider than the wick's rating can cause the wick to drown.

I've burned candles with HTP wicks that were flawless for sixty hours, and I've burned one that tunneled by hour three because the manufacturer used the wrong size. The candle was expensive, the jar was beautiful, and the wick was wrong. That one went into the burn journal as a cautionary tale.

When to trim, and what happens if you don't

Trim before every burn. That's the rule. A quarter inch. If you skip a trim, the wick will mushroom, and the mushroom will do three things: it'll reduce the flame height, it'll dim the hot throw, and it'll streak soot down the jar. I've measured a 40% drop in hot throw from a mushroomed wick on a Yankee jar. The number isn't a guess. It's in my journal from a February test.

The other rule is the first burn. Let the melt pool reach the edge of the jar before you blow it out. For a 4-inch diameter jar, that's usually two to three hours. For a 3-inch jar, it's closer to two. If you don't, you'll tunnel, and tunneling is almost always a first-burn problem. The honest bottom line

But I know this: the wick is the cheapest part of a candle, and it's the part that decides whether the other 95% of the product works. If you're buying candles, check the wick type before you buy. If you're burning candles, trim before every light. A candle that soots, tunnels, or throws weak isn't usually broken. It's usually got a wick that's too long, too short, or wrong for the jar.
